It’s almost 12 am on a Saturday night and I am tuned into ESPN2 watching the Calgary Stampede play the BC Lions. Midways through the 3rd quarter it is 10-6 Calgary. Wait…Jerome Messam just scored putting Calgary up 16-6. BC is having a hard time protecting their young quarterback Jonathan Jennings. Normally, this time on a Saturday night, I would either be enjoying a date night with my wife or perusing Netflix or Amazon Prime for an action movie. Welcome to the world of fantasy sports where even the CFL has become interesting! I am currently winning $1.30 on the entries I have played on Draft Kings. A total of 7 entries 6 in the quarter arcade and a $1 game.
I have missed out on the biggest scorer of the night, Chris Williams with the Ottawa Redblacks. He scored 41.8 points in a shootout with the Edmonton Eskimos. His name just didn’t register with me in the limited research I was able to do. That was a mistake I made, the game had an over/under of 53, a starting receiver should have registered. Being a first time daily CFL fantasy player, I have a learning curve to overcome. I have to develop a process to identify valid information to make an informed decision. This requirement pertains to all daily fantasy sports.
It is great to have some football to watch while the calendar slowly turns towards the NFL season. This is also a great time to get a head start on research for the NFL upcoming season. I have started my NFL research while getting ready for my season long fantasy football league. Nothing really in depth at this point, looking at projections and doing some mock drafts at Fantasy Pros. The real work starts when the preseason games begin. I am a big proponent of data and the numbers but there is an eyeball test to football that the numbers sometimes does not account for.
As for this game, BC ended up winning a very exciting fourth quarter comeback 20-18. My Draftkings lineups did not end up so well. I didn’t have any winning entries. But it sure did make the game more interesting. No way, I would have watched the entire game without a DFS interest. The CFL now has a new fan. Note to self: have Chris Williams in your lineups next week.
